Week Eight Blogging Task

It's officially December and you know what that means... Christmas!! This week I want you to blog about your most memorable Christmas. It might have been one year when you got an amazing present, or when you did something different from usual. Or maybe, it's that you like Christmas so much, you could pick any year! If you are really struggling to think of one, you could create your own memorable Christmas...

Week Five Blogging Task

Write a list of 10 things that make you happy. For each thing, write one sentence explaining why it makes you happy. If you want to write more than one sentence explaining it you can!

For example: #1: Helping other people. When I help other people, it makes me happy because I am doing something good for both myself and someone else.

Week Four Blogging

The 100 word challenge blogging prompt this week is a picture of what some might consider an unusual statue in St Louis, USA. See if you can think of a title/name for the statue - this will help give you some ideas. You might want to write as if you were the statue, or a tourist visiting the statue... the ideas are endless! I can't wait to read what creative things you come up with!

People Savers Course

This week Room 6 were lucky enough to have the lovely Kirsty from St Johns return to lead us in our People Savers Course. We learnt how to best respond to a range of serious injuries, and how to prioritise who to help first to save as many people as possible in an emergency! Here are some photos of us learning in action.

Week Nine Blogging Task

Read the story starter below and continue writing your own blog post based on this. Use the picture prompt to help your imagination.

The dinosaurs all gave a simultaneous roar... it was coming. Moments before, the lake had been quiet and peaceful. As the golden sun rose above the shadowy, jagged mountains on the horizon, creatures came from far and wide to enjoy an early morning drink from the cool lake. Then they heard the noise... footsteps in the distance. Thump.... thump... thump... it could only be one thing...

Week Seven Blogging: 5 things you can't live without

This week, you are going to tell your readers a little bit more about yourself. Post a list of five things you could not live without, and give an explanation of why for each!

Here is my example:

Five things Miss McGowan couldn't live without

1. My family. My family mean so much to me and without them I wouldn't be the person I am today. I am so lucky to have them in my life, and without them I would be a bit lost.
2. My pets! I absolutely adore my dog Poppy and my cat Bella. They are really cute and cuddly, and I also love getting out and about when walking Poppy.
3. My friends. I have an amazing group of friends who I adore. They support me, keep me sane, and we have so much fun together. I really value having them in my lives. How boring would life be without good friends?
4. Coffee. I cannot remember the last day I did not drink a coffee! It gives me energy, keeps me awake and (I think!) makes me a happier person. Without coffee I would be tired and more grumpy.
5. My phone. Even though this might sound cringy, my phone is how I keep in contact with a lot of people, and without my calendar I would be forever forgetting my plans! My phone helps me feel connected to a range of people and helps keep me organised.

Week Six Blogging Task

Write your own story ending for this weeks blogging task....

"I was standing with my camera at the ready, peering through the hole in the fence. I waited and waited but nothing happened. Suddenly, I felt something watching me. My heart began to race as I saw a figure making its way towards me..."

First Aid: Responding in an Emergency

This afternoon Room 6 were fortunate enough to have Kirsty from St Johns come in and teach us what to do if we are faced with an emergency. We learnt, and practiced, each step of the DRSABCD - the acronym which steps you through first aid in emergency situations. Our CPR skills were tested on the dummies, and we also watched a defibrillator in action. We learnt that using both CPR and a defibrillator significantly increases the chances of survival of someone in critical need. Below are some pictures of us hard at work!

James Hargest Exchange

What an exciting exchange James Hargest was!! OIS were the triumphant overall winners thanks to the early lead we took, but the end result was 8-7 - it couldn't have been closer! A big congratulations to all those students who participated in the exchange, and those who supported their friends - it was a fantastic fun three days of sportsmanship, rivalry and new friendships made. To read more about Hargest, head to student blogs to read their recounts.

Below is a picture of some of Room 6 with the Hargest Shield, and a few actions shots from the competition.

Extra Blogging Challenge: On Top of the World

Choose one of these three story starters, and continue writing.

"Holding on tightly to the support rope, the man made his way to the top."
"The wind blew strongly, and the structure seemed to shake as he climbed."
"His heart was pounding and all he could think about was having his feet back on solid ground again."

Week Four Creative Blogging

"Since she was young, Kate had known she was different to most people. It was only now though, that she realised the extent of this difference. She was beginning to realise her true powers."

You can choose to either use the above quote as your story starter, or simply use it to help you with the context of the picture below. Write a minimum of 100 words.

Week Three Blogging

Write a 100 word blog post involving this picture. Consider these questions:

- Who are the two people walking together?
- Where are they going?
- What are the two lines down the middle of the track?
- Why was this path built and when?

If you are stuck, here are two different ways you could start your blog post:

1. "The boy was beginning to feel tired. They had been walking for hours..."
2. "Hundreds of years ago, the tracks were part of the city's busy train system. Now..."

Week Two Blogging

This week I would like you to write a 100 word blog post based on the picture below.

Think about what is happening in the photo, how the man might be feeling and what the deeper meaning of this picture could be. You can write your post from the man's perspective, from your own perspective or however you would like but remember to aim for 100 words - no more, no less!

Welcome to Term Three

We have made it half way through 2019 in Room 6 and it is now time to tackle Term 3! I am looking forward to seeing everyone again and hearing some stories from your holidays and this weeks blogging task will help me with that.

Your task is to write a blog post with three facts about your holidays - but here's the catch - two are true and one is a lie! We will try to work out which one is made up, and which two actually happened.

Here is an example about my holidays:

These holidays, I had a family birthday party to celebrate my birthday. Lots of my family made an effort to come and celebrate with me, including my Mum, Grandmother, Aunties and Cousins. We had pizza for dinner and a berry brownie cheesecake for dessert which was delicious! I feel incredibly grateful for the amazing family I have.

While I was in Melbourne, I broke my pinky toe. I was running to catch the tram while wearing sandals and when I went to cross the road my foot twisted and my toe took the impact! Luckily it isn't too sore now, but it is still strapped to the toe next to it to help it recover.

I ate truffles for the first time in my life these holidays! For those of you who don't know what truffles are, they are a type of fungi fruit, and you only eat tiny slithers of them. I had them on top of a pasta dish. The truffles tasted very different to what I expected, but I quite liked them. Unfortunately, they are quite expensive so I won't be eating them again anytime soon!

Can you work out which of these three is the lie, and which two are true? Leave me a comment if you think you know!

Week Ten Blogging Task

This week for your blogging, choose one of the below options. There are not 100 word limits on these blog posts, so provide lots of detail for your readers! Enjoy your last blogging task of Term Two!

  • Read a short story on Epic, and then write a review of the book on your blog. Make sure you include the title and author as well as details on the setting, characters and plot.
  • Create a "Top 10" list. It can be your top 10 of anything - for example, your top 10 moments so far this year, top 10 favourite TV movies, top 10 songs.
  • Make a quiz for your readers on any topic. Post the link on your blog for them to try it out.
  • If you had three wishes, what would they be and why?
  • Imagine you were the principal of OIS for one day. What would do in that one day? Think about things you would change, including what students did that day!

House Choirs 2019

The highlight of last week (and for many, the term!) was House Choirs. This years theme was 80s music, and all four houses were fantastic! A big congratulations to Rata who came first. The placings, and song choices are as follows, as are the video recordings.

1st - Rata - Wake Me Up (Wham)
2nd - Ngaio - I'm Still Standing (Elton John)
3rd - Konini - I Love a Rainy Night (Eddie Rabbit)
4th - Kowhai - Footloose (Kenny Loggins)

A special shout out to our two house captains, Emma and Korban, who did a great job conducting their choirs, and to Hannah who won Most Promising Soloist!

Last but not least, the teachers put together a lip sync video as part of the 80s theme. Here we are syncing to Don't Stop Me Now by Queen. Enjoy!!

  • How did they get here?
  • Where have they come from?
  • What are they for?

Week Eight: Blogging Task

This weeks blogging task is something a little bit different! I want you to answer:

"Where do you see yourself in ten years time?"

Describe what you will be doing, where you will be living, and what your aspirations, dreams and goals will be at this stage. Consider who you will be friends with, and think about your family too.

Include enough information so that the reader can picture exactly what your future life will look like.

100WC Week Seven

The prompt this week will get your imaginations working! It is:
…it looked just like a glass of water…
Things to think about:
  • What is it?
  • What should it look like?
  • Is there a problem with it?
  • How do you feel if it isn’t a glass of water?

100 Word Challenge: Week 6

This weeks blogging prompt is five words. Be sure to include them all in your 100 words, and if you're not sure what any of them mean check an online (or hard copy!) dictionary first. The five words are:

                     Rose      Scooter       Excited      Late      Transparent

Week 5 100 WC

We are investigating feelings this week. In particular, I want to know about the angry you. The prompt that you must include in your writing is:
"… I was so cross that …"
Remember that cross is another word that means angry. Things to think about:
  • What gets you cross/angry?
  • How do you feel?
  • What do you do?
  • How do you move on from this feeling?

100 WC Extra Tasks

Here are two extra 100 word challenges. Use these pictures to inspire you and your writing. Happy blogging!

Sheep Eye Dissection

This week we began the hands on part of our Science Inquiry unit, The Human Body! This unit links strongly to our explanation writing unit this term and will be the inspiration for many of our pieces.

On Monday we investigated the digestive system and replicated the process with baked beans, sponge cake, and liquids to represent elements such as bile and enzymes. Miss McGowan did the demonstration without gloves much to everyones disgust!

On Tuesday, we dissected sheep's eyeballs in groups. There were a lot of oohs and aahs, breaks to get some fresh air for those who felt queasy, but most importantly lots of fun hands on learning! As we dissected the eyeballs we learnt the names of different parts, and some of their functions. Room 6 is looking forward to more dissections next week!

100 Word Challenge Blogging

Assembly Video

Room 6 was on assembly this week and everyone put a massive effort into filming and editing for our video presentation. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be and as the video was exporting, it crashed. Room 6 students stepped up to the challenge and without rehearsing, stood up in front of the entire school and presented their writing pieces. Unfortunately not all of the skits could be performed in assembly, so here is the video for everyone to appreciate. A big thank you to Room 6 students for going with the flow, not stressing and accepting that we had to change plans at the last minute!

Elgregoe Show

On Wednesday morning OIS were lucky enough to see "You've Got The Power" by the Elgregoe Show. We packed into the hall and sat entranced for an hour watching awesome magic tricks and learning about how each and every one of us have the power to stop bullying and make a difference. Two Room 6 class members, Riley and Evah, were both chosen as assistants for tricks, and are pictured below! Not a bad way to spend a morning at school!!

OIS Class Councillors: Term 1 + 2

As voted by the students of Room 6, our student class councillors are Nova and Oliver. These two have been doing a fantastic job attending weekly meetings, reporting back to the class and gathering student feedback. They will continue in their roles this term, and we will vote a new set of class councillors in for Term 3 and 4.

Life Education with Harold

What an awesome start to the last week of term - we were lucky enough to have Life Ed and Harold the Giraffe visit us at OIS! Our learning focus was drugs - we learnt about different types of drugs that exist, what addiction is, and the potential effects of drug addiction. Room 6 had lots of laughs at Harold's jokes, and learnt heaps - a huge thanks to the Life Education team!

Get NZ Writing

Today, Room 6 finished the Get NZ Writing Poetry kit. Over the last week we have constructed a class poem, collaboratively written a colour poem on the colour blue and each wrote an anagram postcard about a mystery item. All of these goodies have been bundled up into a courier bag and are heading to our partner classroom in Hamilton next week. It will be incredibly exciting to see what is in the parcel they send us! Tino pai Room 6 for a great job this week - the whole class photo shows how exhausted we felt after today's big effort! Just a snippet of this work is included below.

Lab in a Box

On Wednesday afternoon, Room 6 was lucky enough to spend some time learning about Physiology with four experts from Lab in a Box! Students measured their resting and active heart rates, took their pulse and learnt about the pH of a range of solutions. We were surprised to learn that lemon juice, vinegar and coke had the same pH level!
